Unleashing Potential (part 5): Mastering Guitar Coordination with My Fixed Pitch System

Writer's picture: Jeff PowersJeff Powers

This addition is geared toward the classical guitarist, but the concept applies to all guitarists and musicians. Most classical guitarists practice scales following major and minor through the circle of fifths, which is a good practice but only covers two modes of the major scale: Ionian and Aeolian.

If you practice my fixed pitch method, you will cover 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 note scales and their corresponding modes. Here, I demonstrate the "7 Modes" of the major scale using the fixed pitch method. The only thing the scales have in common is the first pitch; they are all related to different major scales. The fixed pitch method creates many more patterns for technique and ear training than following only major and minor.

Also, if you follow the fingerings of the page I post, you will be playing three notes per string, which will be much easier to execute (hence they are called speed scales).
